A Theory of Network Equivalence - Part II: Multiterminal Channels

چکیده
A technique for bounding the capacities of networks of independent channels is introduced. Parts I and II treat pointto-point and multiterminal channels, respectively. Bounds are derived using a new tool called a bounding model. Channel 1 is an upper (lower) bounding model for channel 2 if replacing channel 2 by channel 1 in any network yields a new network whose capacity region is a superset (subset) of the capacity region of the original network. This paper derives bounding models from noiseless links, with lower bounding models corresponding to points in the channel’s capacity region and upper bounding models corresponding to points in a new channel characterization called an emulation region. Replacing all channels in a network by their noiseless upper (lower) bounding models yields a network of lossless links whose capacity region is a superset (subset) of the capacity region for the original network. This converts a general (often stochastic) network into a network coding instance, enabling the application of tools and results derived in that domain. A channel’s upper and lower bounding models differ when the channel can carry more information in some networks than in others. Bounding the difference between upper and lower bounding models bounds both the accuracy of the technique and the price of separating source-network coding from channel coding.

A Theory of Network Equivalence, Parts I and II
A family of equivalence tools for bounding network capacities is introduced. Part I treats networks built from point-to-point channels. Part II generalizes the technique to networks containing wireless channels such as broadcast, multiple access, and interference channels. The main result of part I is roughly as follows. Given a network of noisy, independent, memoryless point-to-point channels,...
متن کاملIntroduction to the Special Issue on Models, Theory, and Codes for Relaying and Cooperation in Communication Networks [Guest Editorial]
THE demand for ever larger, more efficient, reliable, and cost effective communication networks is motivating new network architectures, such as ad hoc networks, cognitive radio, relay extensions for cellular networks, sensor networks, and wireless mesh networks. The study of such networks requires a fundamental shift from thinking of a network as a collection of independent communication pipes...
متن کاملMultiterminal Secrecy by Public Discussion
This monograph describes principles of information theoretic secrecy generation by legitimate parties with public discussion in the presence of an eavesdropper. The parties are guaranteed secrecy in the form of independence from the eavesdropper’s observation of the communication. Part I develops basic technical tools for secrecy generation, many of which are potentially of independent interest...

متن کاملUnified Theory of Source Coding: Part II -- Multiterminal Problems
In the first paper of this two part communication, we solved in a unified framework a variety of two terminal source coding problems with noncooperative encoders, thereby consolidating works of Shannon, Slepian-Wolf, Wyner, Ahlswede-Körner, Wyner-Ziv, Berger et al. and Berger-Yeung. To achieve such unification we made use of a fundamental principle that dissociates bulk of the analysis from the...
